DEBORAH TURBEVILLE:
Turbeville established her reputation early with highly original work that was both visionary and immediately recognizable, and is accredited with changing the face of fashion photography. Women’s Wear Daily wrote about Turbeville in 2009, that she was “transforming fashion photography into avant-garde art”
Born in Massachusetts and raised in New England. Only twenty years old she moved to New York City to work with designer Claire McCardell. Having a fond interest in designer clothing Deborah became a fashion editor. She joined Harper's Bazaar in 1963, working with its fashion editor, Marvin Israel, and his crew of photographers, which included Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon and Hiro.
Turbeville soon discovered that her true passion was photography, and encourage by the support of Richard Avedon she leapt into the world of photography to find that it encompassed everything she knew– fashion, people and the transformative power of light.
In the beginning neither journalism nor art nor fashion knew just quite what to do with Turbevilles images. Her pictures where blurry, grainy, and tormented into painterly colors, scratched, marked, cello-taped. 'I destroy the image after I've made it,' said Turbeville. 'Obliterate it a little so you never have it completely there.' It's a quite un-American world, a view through the rear window, fascinated by the beaten, worn and forgotten”.
In addition to advertising and editorial fashion work, Turbeville has published a number of books like: Maquillage (1975), Wallflower (1978), Unseen Versailles (1981), and Newport Remembered. Her last published book was The Fashion Pictures (2011).
